I am the founder and CEO of 1001 Hobbies. We brought our logistics in-house a little over a year ago. We wanted better control over our costs and a closer relationship with the products. Our catalog now holds more than 200,000 SKUs across model kits, board games and collectible products such as manga.

We estimate today that, compared with the start of the operation, we’ve cut order preparation time by roughly 40%. We ship 70,000 to 80,000 parcels a year, with strong seasonality and more parcels at Christmas. We run a warehouse of about 1,000 square meters with a team of six people covering every operation.

Before choosing Boostmyshop, we were with an outsourced logistics provider, quite far from us geographically, and it was hard to have our own processes. When you use an outside provider, it costs a little more per order.

The first reason was managing cross-docking, meaning just-in-time flow. Today more than 80% of our catalog isn’t held in stock, even though we have a substantial inventory. myFulfillment makes it very easy to spot, at receiving, the products that have to go straight back out for customer orders. For us, more than 25% of orders are handled that way: the product doesn’t pass through stock. Chaotic storage lets a given product sit in several places in the warehouse. The mobile app on the handheld is easy to use, which makes our picking runs more efficient. The first step is receiving the products. We enter what we expect from our suppliers. When the cartons are opened, we scan the products, which identifies them and checks off the ordered lines as we go. For put-away, we assign one or more locations to each product in the mobile app by scanning the product barcode and the location barcode. Order picking runs in waves. On a single-product wave, we can put all the products loose on the cart, since each product is a whole order. For multi-product waves, by contrast, we use dedicated carts with small bins that let us pre-sort the products by order. On a wave, we scan a product. The app brings up the matching order record directly. We confirm the carrier and the weight, then the shipping label and the packing slip are printed.

I felt straight away that we could adapt the tool, or have it adapted, to our needs. That comes from the range of settings Boostmyshop offers, but also from the development team’s appetite and ability to adapt to our particular business needs. We are pleased with the choice of Boostmyshop, which lets us run our logistics operations at a reasonable cost while gaining efficiency. We particularly appreciate the responsiveness of the Boostmyshop teams. They fix any day-to-day problems and they also listen to our improvement suggestions. Boostmyshop is, in my view, well suited to relatively mature e-merchants shipping several tens of thousands of parcels a year. The solution is fairly easy to work with. It can be useful to call on Boostmyshop or its partners for more advanced configuration or to train teams. In our case, we managed to get to grips with the tool in a few weeks. It is a fairly robust solution, and one we are entirely comfortable growing with for several more years.
