Amazon SEO: Find What Is Blocking Your Product

Amazon SEO connects a shopper's query with a product listing. Check whether the listing appears for the search term, then follow impressions, clicks, and purchases. Change one field after finding the first weak signal. Keep it if that signal improves. Test price once shoppers can find the listing.

The essentials

  1. An ASIN can appear for a search term yet receive few impressions. The first weak signal determines which field to test.
  2. An indexed ASIN may lack impressions; a visible listing may lack clicks. Each symptom calls for a different test.
  3. For the high-tech seller in the AutoPilot BuyBox case, about 30% of SKUs needed frequent repricing. The other 70% needed periodic checks.
  4. A test changes one field within a fixed window. The change is kept only if the signal chosen in advance improves.
  5. When price is less competitive, myPricing shows how your offer compares with the market. The floor price calculator gives the minimum selling price.

On Monday morning, your best-selling ASIN is missing from the first three pages of Amazon for its main search term. An ASIN is the product identifier assigned by Amazon. The listing is live and Seller Central shows stock, so the break is somewhere you have not looked yet. Do not rewrite the title.

Start by locating the break. The shopper may be using words that no longer match the listing. The result card may be losing clicks, or the offer may not be available to buy. Make a different change for each problem.

Under Regulation (EU) 2019/1150, which has applied since July 12, 2020, ranking means "the relative prominence given to the goods or services offered…" (Article 2(8)). Article 5 requires marketplaces to name the main ranking parameters in their terms and conditions. They must also explain the relative importance of those parameters. Marketplaces do not have to reveal their algorithms under paragraph 6.

You lose a sale, but you do not know the cause yet. Follow the query and ASIN, then stop at the first missing signal before changing the listing or price.

Which signals should you follow, and in what order?

A shopper enters words into Amazon's search box. Those words form a query. Amazon SEO is the work of matching a product listing to that query. First check whether the listing appears for the search term, then follow impressions, clicks, and purchases.

Presence means the listing can appear for the query. An impression occurs when Amazon displays the product in the results. A click takes the shopper from that result card to the product page. If you begin with purchases, you can easily end up editing a field that affects a different stage.

Separate organic results from Sponsored Products placements. Sponsored Products are paid ads, as Amazon’s SEO guide explains. When recording where a product appears, track its organic placement separately from its ad placement.

The European Commission notes that the vast majority of sales on Amazon’s European websites go through the Featured Offer.

The practical point: the shopper sees different fields on the two screens. A new photo does not create impressions. Backend terms do not make the result title easier to read.

Raluca Ursu tested ranking effects in 2018 in a field experiment published in Marketing Science. A travel search site randomly changed the order of its hotel results.

People examined different hotels when the order of the results changed. After opening an offer, they made the same choice regardless of its position.

Which words do shoppers actually search for?

Picture the shopper. They may search by use, material, size, or compatibility. Your product line name comes later. Compare this language with Amazon suggestions, queries already earning impressions, customer questions, reviews, and required category attributes.

Amazon recommends using relevant terms in the title, bullet points, description, and backend search terms. Backend terms sit in Seller Central and stay hidden from shoppers. Finish this sentence for each term: "This ASIN answers this query because…" Remove the term if no truthful product attribute completes the sentence.

Shoppers do not always use the same words. In its 2026 key e-commerce figures, published on July 1, 2026, FEVAD reports that close to one in three French online shoppers already uses AI during a purchase.

They mainly research and compare products with AI. Review the words shoppers use in their questions and reviews.

Which listing fields should you change first?

Give each field one job before you touch it. Choose a signal that can show whether the change worked. Amazon's listing documentation notes that requirements differ by category and store. A+ Content means the enhanced modules that eligible brands can add below the main description.

FieldWhat it must establishExpected signal
Category, attributesThe right product category and filtersPresence for the query

Suppose you replace the main image to win more clicks. First, set the test window and the click-through rate you will watch. Restore the old image if that rate does not improve. Return to the diagnosis: the image was not the first weak signal to address.

Check format limits inside your own account as well. In January 2025, Amazon France announced new title requirements effective January 21. Amazon set a 200-character limit for most categories and prohibited some special characters. Follow the rule displayed for your category first.

Why is an indexed ASIN still hard to find?

An indexed ASIN is one that Amazon can match to a query. Indexing does not guarantee a visible position. A listing on page eight may receive almost no impressions. Start with the symptom shown in your reports or on the search screen.

SymptomEvidence to inspectLikely cause
ASIN absent for a queryCategory, attributes, visible copyIndexing or relevance
Few impressionsSearch Query Performance, comparable periodRelevance or demand
Impressions without clicksMain image, title, displayed priceSearch-result presentation
Clicks without purchasesQuestions, reviews, content, lead timeConversion or offer
Featured Offer lostEligibility, landed price, lead timeOffer and price

The first four rows concern the listing and how shoppers see it. The fifth concerns the seller offer attached to the product page. Start there with price monitoring, then use the Amazon Buy Box guide if Amazon is not selecting your offer. If a product page earns clicks but no purchases, check the offer and any unanswered shopper questions.

The listing is not always the cause. A home and garden retailer supported by Boostmyshop received orders from five channels, including Amazon and another marketplace. Its team tracked stock in five tabs and a spreadsheet. Sales on that other marketplace did not reduce the Amazon stock figure, so customers bought unavailable items and some orders shipped one to two days late.

The retailer brought its orders and stock into one system. The team resumed same-day shipping. Boostmyshop does not write product listings. We work on orders and pricing when the diagnosis reveals a problem in those areas.

How do you test a change without losing the baseline?

Before the first edit, record the period, query, ASIN, impressions, clicks, and purchases available in your account. If a metric is missing, write down the exact phrase, marketplace, time, and number of result pages checked. That dated observation becomes your baseline.

Change one field next. Where Amazon permits it, Manage Your Experiments shows shoppers two versions of a title, image, description, bullet points, or A+ Content. Amazon limits the service to professional sellers enrolled in Brand Registry. The ASIN must also meet the stated traffic requirements.

Keep an audit sheet for each ASIN you test. Sixteen columns are enough: the starting figures, the change, the commercial context, and the keep-or-revert decision.

Eligible brands can also use Brand Analytics reports. Search Query Performance follows a brand-linked query through the shopping funnel. Top Search Terms lists popular searches and associated products. Access depends on the account and marketplace.

By the end, your team should be able to say: "The first weak signal is X. We tested Y. We will keep the change if Z improves." If X is still unknown, observe another commercial cycle before editing again.

When does price actually matter?

Test price when the listing appears and earns visits but the offer remains uncompetitive. If you lower the price, you may move back ahead of the offer that was beating you. Check the product’s organic search position separately.

Next, count the products that truly need action. For one high-tech marketplace seller, we manage prices for around 1,000 SKUs on Amazon and another marketplace.

Of those SKUs, about 30% faced active competition and needed frequent repricing. The other 70% were stable or slow-moving, so periodic checks were enough.

Amazon SEO, Best Sellers Rank, or Buy Box?

Ask one question first: can the shopper find this listing for the query? Amazon's SEO guide describes Best Sellers Rank as sales performance within a category. That rank is not an indexing measure for a keyword. The Buy Box, now called the Featured Offer, selects one eligible seller offer on the product page.

The European Commission addressed that selection in its commitments decision of December 20, 2022, cases AT.40462 and AT.40703. The Commission records that the vast majority of sales on Amazon's European websites go through the Buy Box. Do not treat that commercial importance as an organic ranking metric.

Amazon must disclose the main parameters, but not its algorithm. You can inspect the declared factors, but you cannot recompute your rank.

Keep the three checks separate on your screen. Search for the listing with one exact query. Look at its category rank only when that context helps. Then check which seller offer Amazon presents for purchase.

Frequently asked questions

Amazon SEO matches a shopper’s query with a product listing. Check whether the listing appears for the search term, then follow impressions, clicks, and purchases. Best Sellers Rank tracks the product’s sales within its category. The Featured Offer selects a seller offer.

Enter the exact phrase on the target marketplace. Record the time, result, and number of pages checked. Compare that observation with Search Query Performance when available. A single search cannot prove broad de-indexing or an account penalty.

Use the main term naturally in the title. Put accurate secondary phrases in bullet points, the description, attributes, and backend terms. Remove repeated terms, competitor brands, and claims about unsupported uses. The category rules and truthful product data come first.

Organic visibility shows whether shoppers find the listing for a query. Best Sellers Rank tracks sales performance inside a category. The Buy Box, now the Featured Offer, selects one eligible seller offer. Each signal answers a separate question.

Change the listing when the evidence points to a relevance problem, missing attributes, or a result card that attracts too few clicks. Test price when the listing is visible but the offer is uncompetitive. Repricing does not create query relevance or prove a higher organic rank.

Eligible brands can read query-level funnel data in Search Query Performance. Top Search Terms shows popular searches and associated products. Manage Your Experiments compares listing versions on eligible ASINs. When a report is unavailable, keep a dated manual observation.

Amazon gives no universal test length. Choose a window that covers a representative commercial cycle before you edit. Record stock, advertising, promotions, reviews, and seasonality. Compare the same query, marketplace, and source when the window closes.
